I love to take pictures of the tree in front of our house.  It represents so much to me...the changing seasons, the promise of new life.  Its roots give stability.  Its arms reach to heaven...I see vulnerability without anxiety.  Solidly planted, it does not fear change.  It does not worry that a subdivision might come and take its place.  The seasons come and go.  The tree never doubts that Spring will bring new clothing and that Winter will pass. It stands with dignity, sometimes providing shade, sometimes shelter from rain. But always reaching to the sky, never fearing being alone, never doubting its purpose or wishing to be something it is not.

Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky,
We fell them down and turn them into paper,
That we may record our emptiness.
-   Kahlil Gibran

The wonder is that we can see these trees and not wonder more.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Many a genius has been slow of growth.   Oaks that flourish for a
thousand years do not spring up into beauty like a reed.
-  George H. Lewis,  1817 - 1878

Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow.
The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.
-  Abraham Lincoln

You can't be suspicious of a tree, or accuse a bird or a squirrel of subversion or
challenge the ideology of a violet.
-   Hal Borland (1908-1978), Sundial of the Seasons, 1964

He who plants a tree, plants a hope.
-  Lucy Larcom, Plant a Tree

A society grows great when old men plant trees
whose shade they know they shall never sit in.
Greek Proverb

My lilac trees are old and tall;
I cannot reach their bloom at all.
They send their perfume over trees
And roof and streets, to find the bees.
-   Lousie Driscoll,  1875 - 1957,  My Garden Is a Pleasant Place

 May my life be like a great hospitable tree,
and may weary wanderers find in me a rest.
-   John Henry Jowett

There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden,
but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it.
-   Minnie Aumonier

As the poet said, "only God can make a tree,"
probably because it's so hard to figure out
how to get the bark on.
-   Woody Allen

Trees by Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree."

-  Joyce Kilmer, 1886-1918,

Except during the nine months before he draws his first breath,
no man manages his affairs as well as a tree does.
-  George Bernard Shaw

Tree at my window, window tree,
My sash is lowered when night comes on;
But let there never be curtain drawn
Between you and me.
-  Robert Frost

I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way
they have to live than other things do.
-   Willa Cather (1873-1947), O Pioneers 1913

Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come.
- Chinese proverb

He that planteth a tree is a servant of God, he provideth a kindness for many generations, and
faces that he hath not seen shall bless him.
-   Henry Van Dyke

Alone with myself
The trees bend to caress me
The shade hugs my heart
-   Candy Polgar

Happy is the man ...   He is like a
tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.
-   Psalms 1: 1-3

A tree does not move unless there is wind.
- Afghan Proverb

A seed hidden in the heart of an apple is an orchard invisible.
-   A Welsh proverb
